Writing

World-Building

In an age where near-on anyone can write and publish, writing well remains a distinctly subjective and difficult exercise. The tension between the Mandarin style of literary flourish plays against the contemporary demand for reductive clarity. Knowing both, and knowing how to affects others with your writing, is still amongst the most important of skills for even the functional of purposes.

Descriptive and Creative Writing

Controlling and enhancing the emotions, of yourself and others, was one of the outrageous ambitions of the romantics. To promote sensibility as a prime purpose of human experience might be seen as indulgent in our contemporary corporate age: to adjust the perspective of yourself and others is rightly seen as the most useful purpose of an English education there is.

Argumentative and Persuasive Writing

Following from the descriptive writing blurb above, to persuade and to argue is of prime importance for any mind that wishes to lead to experience more than that which is directly in front of your face. Great writing here focuses on ideas and concepts; not just the physicality of the world immediately within your grasp. .

Accuracy and Literacy

For thirty years grammar was neglected under the idea of social constructivist empowerment. Even now, explicit teaching of literacy is seen a remedial at best. However, very nearly everyone has gaps in their literacy which can, and should, be addressed. Read of some ways to do that here.

Writing for Life and Publication

The act of writing for publication is an act of validation. Yet the traditional publication industry has been challenged for over a decade by digital media. Until the internet is locked up, publication remains a wide possibility for anyone. Some thoughts and links to mainstream publishing exist in this module.
