I always refer to necessity of cultural captial when I teach in anecdotes. Alan Bennett gives a great reason in his superb play The History Boys:

”Words said in that reverential way that is somehow Welsh. That’s what the tosh is for. Brief Encounter, Gracie Fields, Ivor Novello–it’s an antidote. Sheer calculated silliness.”

Every day, or near enough, I play for my students some form of cultural capital in the form of a short video. Whether it is from the field of sport, music or even something else, they are usually rather silly.

See this link for the youtube video list. I am adding to it each day.
