I have written for some time about how I have focussed on criteria-based planning rather than content-based planning. Friends and colleagues both at home and abroad and tried to use these rubrics with some success. All have reported feeling greater investment and reward in their marking as a result of these rubrics, and (I think) more rigorous and precise teaching as a result of their deployment.
As promised, I attach below for you a 1,200 word template of the writing rubrics for Key Stage 3. They are adapted from the DfES/DCSF materials freely available. What I have done is to turn these materials into more precise language, and in a format that will allow you to copy/paste easily into your medium term plans and other planning mediums.
What I find most useful about them is how you can select the range of levels most suitable from your class. That, and that you can edit them precisely to the needs of your task/content.
